TaKeTiNa is a musical and meditative workshop that reconnects us to our natural rhythmic ability. Engage your body, mind and senses to develop awareness and cultivate presence.

The body is the instrument through which primal rhythmic images, not specific rhythm patterns, are accessed. Drawing on the whole person, TaKeTiNa looks like dance and sounds like music.

With this meditative practice you become present with the here and now. You can deeply relax while the mind is alert and focused in the present moment. You can increase your ability to focus, gain clarity, and deepen the sense of balance within your life.

All are welcome- TaKeTiNa is beginner friendly!

About Michael Kenny: Michael brings his years of experience as a music therapist, training in group rhythm facilitating, and passion for using music as a healing path to his work. Michael, the only Certified TaKeTiNa Teacher in Texas, is also HealthRhythms Certified. He holds Bachelor and Master degrees in Music Therapy, and populations served include psychiatric hospitals, jails, schools, festivals and corporate boards.

Join us for an introduction to Tai Chi and all the benefit this practice includes. This session will cover principles of practice, Qigong, silk reeling, and formwork.

With the introduction to push hands, learn more about the 2 person exercises of Tai Chi. (Students may observe or participate in part 2.)

"Tai chi is often described as “meditation in motion,” but it might well be called “medication in motion.” There is growing evidence that this mind-body practice, which originated in China as a martial art, has value in treating or preventing many health problems. And you can get started even if you aren’t in top shape or the best of health.”

“In this low-impact, slow-motion exercise, you go without pausing through a series of motions named for animal actions — for example, “white crane spreads its wings” — or martial arts moves, such as “box both ears.” As you move, you breathe deeply and naturally, focusing your attention — as in some kinds of meditation — on your bodily sensations.

Tai chi differs from other types of exercise in several respects. The movements are usually circular and never forced, the muscles are relaxed rather than tensed, the joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched. Tai Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery.”

Humans were designed to laugh. Laughter is nature's stress-buster. It lifts our spirits with a happy high that makes us feel good and improves our behavior towards others. We all know that laughter makes us feel good. Laughter is gentle exercise. It fill your lungs and body with oxygen, deep-clears your breathing passages and exercises your lungs. When we laugh our bodies release a cocktail of hormones & chemicals that have startling positive effects on our system. Stress is reduced, blood pressure drops, depression is lifted, your immune system is boosted & more. Western science is just starting to discover the great effects of laughter. Laughter Yoga provides the opportunity to laugh, without reason, to enjoy the countless benefits to body and spirit that laughter offers.

Each lesson begins with simple movements, which gradually increase in complexity, all organized around a function such as hip opening, movement of the shoulder girdle, or organizing head and neck. You'll discover greater flexibility, improved balance, grace, and pleasure in moving. ATM is a wonderful complement to dance, yoga, Pilates, Nia, and other movement modalities

Instructor Angela Alston, GCFP, MFA, began taking Awareness Through Movement® in 1996. She trained in The Feldenkrais Method® of Somatic Education in New York, Houston, and Chicago and was certified to teach ATM® in 2008. Angela also offers Functional Integration® private sessions. Angela has studied a variety of movement forms, including yoga and dance, and she is an award-winning maker of dance films. She has an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin and a BA in philosophy and biology from Swarthmore College.

Different from going to a therapist for bodywork, MELT empowers people with simple, self-care tools for long-term wellness.
