In the weekly Barre classes, we use props and a ballet barre to challenge balance and build a strong foundation while performing a variety of exercises created to target isolated muscle groups. In this workshop, we will focus on deconstructing the alignment of those postures to maximize your efforts and ensure the most body-positive results!  Bring water, towel and tutu! (*tutu optional)

The Nia 5 Stages are an integrative movement practice based on the five stages of human development: Embryonic, Creeping, Crawling, Standing and Walking. Practiced with awareness, these stages have the power to facilitate optimal alignment, improved function and comfort in the body. Whether practiced at length or for as little as five minutes a day, this system provides a tool for reclaiming and sustaining mobility, flexibility, strength, agility and stability in the body. Transformational, this work will connect you more deeply to the magic and wisdom of the body that is dedicated to healing.

What does creativity mean to you? Is it only about art? Or can we allow creativity to be anything that awakens us? We are extending April’s Bhavana in Motion immersion to 3 hours for a deep dive into this creative inquiry.

The Living Art Collective is the introduction of art into a sacred setting where the creative expression of artists is honored as a channeling of divine intelligence and human collective unconscious. It is there that we take in and unravel how the art touches us, through movement, sounding, drawing, writing, or any other creative modality that calls to us.

The dance will move us to a space of allowing and receptivity. The art will entice the voice of the soul to be channeled through the mind. Jodi Roberts’ sacred sound bath will usher us into our process that does not understand the ideas of right and wrong.

The Sanskrit word bhavana means "to call into existence, spiritual manifestation." Bhavana in Motion is a movement modality, a way of living, an awakening to the potency of possibility. The practice itself is an amalgamation of three principal elements: tantra yoga, conscious dance, and shamanic ritual, interwoven with creative expression, meditation, breath, and the whisperings of deep silence. Bhavana in Motion is a weaving of these practices as a journey to the center where all movement begins and where we learn to trust the body’s organic wisdom. Each experience is unique and the format or sequence of elements changes shape each time we practice. Some basic yoga experience is helpful; no dance or meditation experience is required.

Please bring your own yoga mat and blanket if you have them. If not, they are provided at the studio.

Hoopdancing helps you:

- build a stronger core

You will learn how to hoop on your waist, hips, chest and several off-body moves that rock.

Ehh... what's this about “Punk Rock?” Are mohawks mandatory?! Blythe believes that 'punk rock' simply refers to an attitude of authenticity and wants to support you in being your most awesome self.

*A Punk Rock Hoops dance hoop is required for this series and available for purchase in the Abundance Boutique at MoveStudio. Punk Rock Hoops vary in price, and average about $45. HOOPCHI SERIES

HoopChi is a combination of dance and Tai Chi-inspired movements with a hoop founded by Betty Lucas.  Rather than spinning the hoop around your waist, HoopChi moves the hoop off your body using the frame of the hoop to stretch and tone your muscles through a series of sequential movements.

You can practice the movements in a slow, more meditative fashion, or speed the movements up and turn HoopChi into a dance. In addition to improving your posture and balance, practicing each movement also exercises your mind and keeps your joints fluid.

For a computer focused, sedentary society, HoopChi is an energizing, toning experience not to be missed! HoopChi also provides hoop dancers new moves and pacing to incorporate into their dance.

BELLYDANCE BASICS SERIES

Develop strength, grace, and fluidity while you explore this beautiful art form! Learn basic bellydance postures, movements, steps, and combinations along with a short choreography. Basic finger cymbal techniques will be introduced after the third class. You will be playing and dancing by the end of this fun and challenging 8-week session!

Learn the movements and techniques of traditional Middle Eastern bellydance. Bellydance is an increasingly popular form of fitness, body-mind practice, and personal/artistic expression for women of all ages, sizes and shapes. Celebrate your feminine beauty and power with this ancient art form.

The Basics series is designed for new beginners with little or no prior experience. It will help prepare you for drop-in classes through progressive instruction in basic Bellydance steps and technique. Beginners are also welcome in our drop-in mixed-level bellydance classes (see class schedule); however, the drop-in classes do move faster and assume some knowledge of the basics, so the best place for new beginners to start is in the Basics series.

 
BELLYDANCE ODYSSEY SERIES

Now that you're comfortable with the basics, you're ready to continue your journey into the world of belly dance. Challenge yourself to take your new skills to the next level! We will learn finger cymbal technique and patterns, explore layering of movements to create hypnotic effects, drill footwork and new steps, and learn how to combine movement into fun, danceable combinations. A short choreography will also be taught so we can put our new skills into practice! (Students will need to purchase a set of finger cymbals - the instructor will help with information on where to buy).
 
The Odyssey series will focus on a specific bellydance topic or technique each 8-week session and may build upon the concepts taught in other series classes. Sample topics include: finger cymbal fundamentals, classic routines, drum solo dancing, veilplay, Egyptian Saidi (folkloric bellydance), and floorwork and balancing. Concepts, techniques, exercises, and a choreography will be taught during each session.

Note: This series is NOT designed for beginners; prior bellydance experience is highly recommended.



HIP HOP BASICS SERIES

Hip Hop is an increasingly popular form of dance fitness, as it involves athletic, powerful moves that will get your heart pumping as well as expressive, creative moves that will let you show a little attitude! In this series, beginner to intermediate dancers will practice the fundamental moves and style of Hip Hop while learning an original piece of choreography that will build over the four-week series. Movements will be broken down for better understanding, and we will work on isolations (hips, shoulders, feet, etc.) that will help prepare you for the choreography. Blending inspiration from old school moves with new school choreography, this is a Hip Hop class for everybody.
